The Iron Butt Rally is an 11-day motorcycle endurance rally that circles the entire United States of America and is held every other year. The 1999 Iron Butt Rally will take place from August 30th to September 13th.

The aim of the rally is first and foremost to cover the distance between checkpoints within the time allowed. Entrants earn points not only by reaching these checkpoints in time, but by finding various bonus locations, and obtaining proof of the visit. Bonus locations have consisted of everything from the straightforward (like a toll receipt) to the hard to find (example), the difficult to reach (example), and to quite simply the ridiculous (example.) The winner is the rider who has earned the highest points total.

While the Rally is indeed a test of a rider's will and endurance, it is also an amazing journey and truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience (though there are many who enter the Rally year after year.)
